Surtess TS14 1/20

With hindsight, this car was crucial in the Team Surtees story, since it marked the start of its decline. It was ready too far in advance, designed and built to conform with deformable structure regulations that were then relaxed, leaving Surtees with an overweight car. Partly, the Firestone change of policy told against the TS-14, it was very quick in its first tests, but devoured front tyres, and in an unhappy coincidence Firestone, ran down their development program as withdrawal was anticipated.
There were also destructive accidents, to set against best GP placing of a third and fourth (both achieved by Pace).
A sandwich construction monocoque, was used in the TS-14, the combination of a full-width nose and side radiators was repeated, and this time suspension was outboard all around. In the TS-14A, used by the team in 1973 (five were built), some weight was shed,
and along the time certain modifications were added.
The type was first raced at Monza in 1972, when Surtees drove it, in his last Grand Prix
and failed to finish. He was to continue test driving almost to the end of his days as a constructor.
